How American Mahjong Scoring Works

When a player wins, the value of the hand (printed on the current NMJL card) is paid by the other players. The discarder pays double if a player won by calling their tile; the other two pay the single value. A self-picked win (winning from the wall) is paid by all three opponents at the doubled rate. Jokerless wins also pay double (an official NMJL rule, except Singles and Pairs hands).

How Many Hands in a Session

A typical American Mahjong session runs 8 to 12 hands and lasts about 2 to 3 hours. Tournament play uses fixed rounds of 4 hands each. Casual home games often play until everyone has been East an equal number of times, which is 4 hands per round and typically 2 or 3 full rounds.
