American Mahjong Strategy: Tips to Win More Games

Winning at American Mahjong requires a combination of hand selection, defensive awareness, and reading your opponents. These strategy tips will help you improve your game from beginner to competitive player.

Hand Selection

Choose 2-3 potential hands during the Charleston. Consider how many tiles you already have, whether the hand is concealed or exposed, and the point value. Flexibility early is key.

Defensive Play

Watch opponents' exposures and discards. Avoid discarding tiles that could complete an opponent's hand. When in doubt, discard tiles that have already been played. Our reading opponents guide goes deeper into the tells that matter.

Joker Management

Jokers are your most valuable tiles. Never pass them during the Charleston. Use them strategically in groups of 3 or more, and exchange exposed Jokers when possible. The full Joker rulebook covers exchange mechanics and edge cases.
