What Are Addition Hands?
The Addition Hands section on the NMJL card is one of the most intellectually engaging categories. Each hand in this section features tiles whose numerical values relate to each other through addition. For example, a hand might require groups where the first number plus the second number equals the third: 1 + 2 = 3, or 3 + 5 = 8.
This mathematical relationship adds a layer of puzzle-solving that distinguishes Addition Hands from sections based purely on even/odd numbers or sequential runs. Players must recognize arithmetic patterns in their starting tiles and match them to available hands on the card.
The section typically includes 4 to 6 hands each year. Patterns may use simple equations (two addends equal a sum) or more complex relationships. Tiles are arranged in pungs, kongs, and pairs as usual, but the numbers chosen for each group must satisfy the addition requirement.
Flowers and Dragons often supplement the numbered groups. Some Addition Hands span multiple suits while others concentrate in one. The section usually offers a mix of open hands (allowing exposures) and concealed hands, with point values ranging from 25 to 50.
The intellectual appeal of this section makes it a favorite among experienced players who enjoy the extra dimension of arithmetic planning layered on top of the usual collection and passing strategy.
Strategy for Addition Hands
Addition Hands require strong number sense and careful hand evaluation:
- Spot the equations, When looking at your starting tiles, think in terms of addition relationships. If you hold multiple 2s, 3s, and 5s, the equation 2 + 3 = 5 may point toward an Addition Hand.
- Cross-reference the card, Not every arithmetic combination appears in the Addition section. After identifying potential equations in your tiles, check the current card to see if a matching hand exists. The NMJL changes the specific equations each year.
- Suit flexibility, Some Addition Hands allow tiles from any suit or mix suits freely. Others lock each number group into a specific suit. Evaluate which variant your tiles best support.
- Charleston planning, During the Charleston, pass tiles that do not fit any arithmetic relationship in your hand. Because Addition Hands use specific number combinations, irrelevant tiles are easy to identify and pass.
- Backup plans, Addition Hands can overlap with other sections. A hand using 2s, 4s, and 6s (where 2 + 4 = 6) might also fit the 2468 section. Keep both options open until your tiles commit you to one path.
The key challenge is that Addition Hands need very specific tile values. If a hand requires groups of 1s, 4s, and 5s, you cannot substitute other numbers, the arithmetic must be exact. This makes Addition Hands less flexible than sections like Like Numbers or 2468, but the reduced competition for specific number combinations can work in your favor.
Defensively, Addition Hands are harder for opponents to read from exposures alone. Seeing pungs of 2s and 3s does not immediately scream "Addition Hand" unless the observer specifically considers the arithmetic. This gives Addition Hand players a degree of natural camouflage.
Reading Addition Hands on the Card
Addition Hands on the card look similar to other numbered-tile sections, but the numbers always satisfy an addition relationship:
- The equation is usually implicit. For example, a hand showing 111 222 333 implies 1 + 2 = 3. The card does not explicitly write out the math, you must recognize the pattern.
- Color coding shows which suits are assigned to each number group. Different colors mean different suits; same colors mean the same suit.
- Flowers (F) and Dragons often accompany the number groups.
- C indicates a concealed hand.
- Some hands feature the X notation, allowing you to choose your own addends as long as the arithmetic holds. For example, XX + YY = ZZ where X + Y = Z gives you the freedom to pick any valid combination.
A concrete example: FF 3333 5555 88 in two colors reads as two Flowers, a kong of 3s in one suit, a kong of 5s in a second suit, and a pair of 8s in one of those suits. The addition relationship: 3 + 5 = 8.
During hand selection, practice scanning your tiles for addition triples. Any three numbers where two add to the third (1+2=3, 1+3=4, 2+6=8, 4+5=9, etc.) are candidates. Hands with strong clustering around an arithmetic triple deserve a look at the Addition section.
