A computer opponent (also called a bot or computer player) is a software-controlled player in a digital Mah Jongg game that makes its own decisions about hand selection, discards, calls, the Charleston, and defensive play. Computer opponents allow you to play a complete four-player game without needing three other human players, making them invaluable for practice and learning.
Computer opponents in American Mahjong range from simple rule-based systems to sophisticated algorithms that mimic skilled human play. At the simpler end, a computer player might follow basic heuristics: keep tiles that match potential hands on the NMJL card, discard tiles that do not fit, and call when a discard completes a needed meld. More advanced systems evaluate multiple candidate hands simultaneously, assess the probability of completing each one given the visible tiles, track opponents' exposures and discards to play defensively, and adjust strategy dynamically as the hand progresses.
The quality of computer opponents varies enormously between platforms. Some bots play so predictably that experienced players can exploit their patterns, while others provide a genuine challenge that pushes human players to improve. The best computer opponents strike a balance: they play well enough to provide meaningful practice without being so perfect that they feel impossible to beat.
Computer opponents also serve an important role in teaching. New players can practice against bots without the pressure of slowing down a table of human players, making mistakes without embarrassment, and replaying situations to understand what went wrong.

- Speed, Computer opponents make instant decisions, so games move much faster. This is great for fitting in practice sessions but can make it hard to adjust when returning to the slower pace of human play
Think of computer opponents as a training tool, not a replacement for the real thing. They help you internalize the card, practice tile evaluation, and develop strategic instincts, but the full Mahjong experience requires sitting across from real people at a real table.
