Claiming Priority

The rules that determine which player gets a discarded tile when multiple players want to claim it. A Mah Jongg call always takes priority over an exposure call.

Priority Rules Explained

In American Mahjong, when a player discards a tile, multiple players may want to claim it simultaneously. Claiming priority rules resolve these conflicts clearly:

  1. Mah Jongg beats everything, A call for Mah Jongg (winning the game) always takes priority over a call for an exposure. If one player wants the tile to win and another wants it for a Pung or Kong, the winning player gets it.
  1. Exposure calls are equal, If two or more players want the same discard for an exposure (not for Mah Jongg), any player can claim it regardless of seating position. In practice, this conflict is rare because players typically need different tiles.
  1. Multiple Mah Jongg calls, If two or more players can win with the same discard, the player closest to the discarder in counterclockwise turn order gets priority.

These rules are simple but important. Knowing that Mah Jongg always wins means you should never hesitate to call for a winning tile, even if another player is also reaching for the same discard. Your win takes precedence over their exposure.

Claiming Priority in Practice

In a real game, claiming priority plays out like this:

Good table etiquette requires all players to pause briefly after a discard before the next player draws. This pause gives everyone a fair chance to call. Rushing through turns can cause missed calling opportunities and disputes.

Note that you cannot call a discard just for a pair unless it completes Mah Jongg. Pairs must be built from wall draws. This is a common point of confusion for new players who may try to call a discard to complete a pair in the middle of a game.

Also remember that concealed hand players cannot call discards for exposures but can call for the final tile that completes their Mah Jongg. This call follows the same priority rules, it beats any exposure call.
