Discard Reading
The skill of interpreting the pattern of tiles opponents discard to infer what hands they are building and which tiles are safe or dangerous.
How to Read Discards
Every tile an opponent discards is a piece of information. They decided they do not need that tile, which eliminates certain hand possibilities and suggests others. Reading discards is the core intelligence-gathering skill in American Mahjong.
Key discard-reading techniques:
- Track suit abandonment, When a player discards multiple tiles from one suit, they have almost certainly abandoned it. Their hand uses other suits.
- Note what is missing, If a player never discards Dragons while freely discarding suited tiles, they are likely collecting Dragons.
- Watch for pattern changes, A player who shifts from discarding Craks to holding them may have pivoted to a Craks-based hand.
- Time the discards, Instant discards mean the tile is clearly useless. Hesitation suggests a difficult choice, meaning the tile had some value.
- Cross-reference with exposures, Combine discard patterns with visible exposures to build a complete picture of each opponent's direction.
You do not need to memorize every tile. Focus on the big patterns: which suits each player is discarding, whether honor tiles are being shed or held, and any sudden changes in discard behavior.
Applying Discard Reads
Once you have read the discard patterns, use the information:
- Identify safe discards, Tiles in suits that opponents are freely discarding are colder. Tiles in suits nobody is discarding are hotter.
- Narrow opponent hands, Cross-reference discard patterns against the NMJL card. If a player is discarding all Winds and Dots, scan the card for hands that use only Bams and Craks (or Bams and Dragons, etc.).
- Anticipate future discards, Players tend to shed their least useful tiles first. If an opponent has been discarding low Bams, they may continue doing so, making those tiles safer for you to hold.
- Detect waiting opponents, A player who suddenly starts discarding quickly and without hesitation may be one tile away from winning. Tighten your defense immediately.
