What Is a Hot Tile?

A hot tile is any tile that appears dangerous to discard because it might help an opponent complete their hand or win the game. The term is informal but universally understood among American Mahjong players.

The opposite is a "cold tile" or "safe tile", one that appears unlikely to help anyone.
