Joker
Wild tiles unique to American Mahjong. There are 8 Jokers in a set, and they can substitute for any tile in a group of 3 or more. Jokers cannot be used in pairs.
What Is a Joker?
The Joker is one of the most distinctive features of American Mahjong. Each set contains 8 Joker tiles that act as wild cards, able to substitute for any tile in a group of three or more (Pung, Kong, Quint, or Sextet).
Jokers do not exist in Chinese, Japanese, or most other Mahjong variants. They are unique to the American game and add a significant strategic layer to gameplay.
Joker Rules
- Jokers can replace any tile in a group of 3+ (Pungs, Kongs, Quints, Sextets)
- Jokers cannot be used in pairs, pairs must be two natural (non-Joker) tiles
- A group can contain any number of Jokers (e.g., a Kong could be 1 natural + 3 Jokers)
- Jokers cannot be discarded if you can use them in your hand (some table rules vary on this)
- Discarded Jokers cannot be claimed by other players
- You can perform a Joker exchange, swapping a natural tile for a Joker in an opponent's exposure
Joker Strategy
Jokers are extremely valuable tiles. Key strategic considerations:
- Never discard a Joker unless absolutely forced (extremely rare)
- Jokers make Quints and Sextets possible, hands with these groups are more achievable when you hold Jokers
- Watch for Joker exchange opportunities, if an opponent exposes a Pung and you hold the matching natural tile, you can swap it for their Joker
- Hands requiring many groups of 3+ benefit enormously from Jokers
- Concealed hands that allow Jokers are much more achievable than those marked "No Jokers"
Joker Exchanges
One of the most exciting plays in American Mahjong is the Joker exchange. When an opponent has an exposure containing a Joker, and you hold the natural tile that the Joker represents, you can swap your tile for their Joker on your turn.
The exchange happens before you discard. You place the natural tile into their exposure and take the Joker into your hand. This is a powerful move because you gain a wild tile while giving up only a specific natural tile.
