The strategic approach to selecting and committing to particular suits in American Mahjong, based on starting tiles, Charleston exchanges, and opponent behavior.

The Three Suits

Three suits. Bams, Craks, Dots. That's it. No suit is better than another. All three work the same mechanically. Your advantage comes from building fast in the suits you choose and from knowing what your opponents want.

Flexibility beats stubbornness here. Forget loyalty to one suit. Good players move between suits as needed. Your best suit changes game to game. It depends on your tiles and what everyone else is doing.

Meaning what? Adapt. Watch, adjust, pivot. That's the heart of it.

Identifying Your Strongest Suit

Look at your first 14 tiles. Count them by suit. If one suit has 6 or 7 tiles, you've got something. That's worth pursuing. If a suit has only 2 or 3, dump it during the Charleston.

But quantity is not everything. Quality matters too. Hold five numbered tiles in sequence (like 3-4-5-6-7 of Bams)? Beautiful. That builds melds fast. Scattered numbers across that suit? Slower, tougher. Look for pairs too. A pair in your strongest suit is gold.

Using the Charleston to Concentrate

The Charleston is your chance. Pass tiles from suits you're dropping. Hope to get tiles in the suit you want to build. Want Craks? Pass Bams and Dots.

Think before you pass though. Random tiles help nobody. If you see Bam tiles flowing back to you repeatedly during passing, note it. That suit might be weak for everyone else. Perfect. Build there. Also watch where tiles go. Smart players read the Charleston to figure out suits everyone else wants.

Reading Opponents and Adapting

Game is live. Watch discards. Watch exposures. Player throwing away all their Bams? They don't need Bams. Player hoarding Craks and discarding everything else? Craks are their target.

Sometimes two people fight for the same suit. Tiles dry up. When that happens, find another suit. The card usually has hands using multiple suits anyway. Don't get locked in. Shift your focus when needed. The game rewards flexibility. Beginners stick stubbornly to one suit. Better players move.
