Table Cover
A felt, neoprene, or fabric mat placed on the table surface to dampen tile noise, prevent tiles from sliding, and protect both the table and the tiles during play.
Why Use a Table Cover?
A table cover (also called a Mahjong mat) is a soft surface placed over the playing table before a game of Mah Jongg. While technically optional, most experienced players consider it essential equipment, on par with a good set and quality racks.
Table covers serve three key purposes:
- Noise reduction, Mahjong tiles are hard and heavy. Without a cover, shuffling tiles on a bare table produces a loud, clattering racket that can be disruptive, especially in apartments or during evening games. A felt or neoprene surface absorbs much of the impact noise, bringing the volume down to a pleasant clacking rather than a deafening crash
- Tile stability, A textured surface prevents tiles from sliding around when building the wall or organizing exposures. On a bare, smooth table, tiles can skid when pushed, leading to collapsed walls and scattered discards
- Surface protection, Tiles can scratch wood, glass, and laminate tabletops over thousands of shuffles. A table cover protects your furniture from wear while also protecting your tiles from hard impacts that can chip engravings
Standard Mahjong table covers are square, typically 33 to 35 inches per side, sized to cover the central playing area. They are made from felt, neoprene, or microfiber fabric, and many feature printed guidelines or decorative designs. Some players prefer plain covers, while others enjoy covers with printed wall placement guides or scoring references.
Choosing and Caring for a Table Cover
When selecting a table cover, consider the material and your playing environment:
- Felt, The traditional choice. Soft, quiet, and affordable. Felt covers may pill or wear over time with heavy use but are easy to replace
- Neoprene, Durable, non-slip, and easy to clean. Neoprene covers lie flat without curling at the edges and roll up neatly for transport. This is the most popular material for regular players
- Microfiber, Soft and machine-washable, making them convenient for groups that eat or drink at the table
To care for your table cover, shake it out after each session to remove tile dust and debris. Spot clean spills immediately. Most neoprene and microfiber covers can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Felt covers may need occasional brushing to remove lint. Store your cover rolled rather than folded to prevent permanent creases that could create uneven surfaces during play. If you transport your set to different locations for game nights, a neoprene cover that rolls into a compact tube is the most practical choice.
