Tile Efficiency
The practice of making discard and draw decisions that maximize the number of useful tiles you could receive on future turns. Efficient play shortens the path to completing your hand.
What Is Tile Efficiency?
Tile efficiency is a strategic concept borrowed from competitive Mahjong theory. It asks a simple question: given the tiles in your hand, which discard leaves you with the greatest number of possible draws that improve your position?
In American Mahjong, you draw one tile per turn from the wall and then discard one tile. This draw-and-discard cycle is the engine of the game. Tile efficiency is about making the most of each cycle by keeping tiles that accept the widest range of useful future draws and discarding tiles that contribute the least.
Consider a simple example: you hold a pair of 5 Bams and a single 8 Bam. If your chosen hand needs a Pung of 5 Bams and does not use 8 Bam at all, discarding the 8 Bam is efficient, it removes a tile that cannot help you while preserving the pair that is already halfway to a Pung. Every future draw of a 5 Bam or a Joker improves your hand.
The concept sounds straightforward, but in practice it involves evaluating multiple candidate discards against the full landscape of tiles you might draw. Strong players develop an intuitive sense for efficiency through experience, while analytical players can reason through the options explicitly.
Applying Tile Efficiency
To play efficiently, consider these principles when choosing your discard:
- Keep tiles that serve your hand pattern, Every tile in your hand should have a clear role in your target hand on the NMJL card. If a tile does not contribute, it is the first candidate for discard.
- Prefer tiles with more "outs", If you must choose between two incomplete melds, keep the one with more remaining tiles in the game. A pair where both remaining copies are still available is stronger than a pair where one copy is already discarded.
- Value Jokers appropriately, Jokers are the most efficient tiles in the game because they fit into any meld of three or more. Never discard a Joker unless you absolutely must (and the rules generally prevent you from doing so).
- Consider flexibility, A tile that fits two potential hands is more efficient to keep than one that fits only one, especially early in the game when you may still be deciding which hand to pursue.
- Factor in exposure opportunities, If keeping a certain tile means you could call a discard on a future turn to complete a meld, that tile has extra efficiency value.
Tile efficiency is not purely mathematical in American Mahjong because the NMJL card dictates specific patterns. Unlike other Mahjong variants where any combination of melds can win, you must match an exact hand. This means efficiency always operates within the constraints of your chosen hand.
Efficiency vs. Defense
Tile efficiency sometimes conflicts with defensive play. The most efficient discard for your hand might be a hot tile that an opponent desperately needs. In these situations, you must balance two competing goals: advancing your hand efficiently and avoiding feeding opponents.
- Early game, Lean toward efficiency. The risk of feeding is lower, and building your hand quickly gives you the best chance of winning.
- Mid-game, Balance efficiency and defense. Make the efficient play when the risk is manageable, but choose the safer discard when an opponent appears close to completion.
- Late game, Lean toward defense. If you are not close to waiting, efficient play matters less than avoiding a loss. Discard the coldest tile available, even if it does not optimize your hand.
The best players find discards that satisfy both goals, tiles that are not needed for their hand AND are safe to discard. When those ideal discards are not available, the decision comes down to game state: how close are you to winning, how close are your opponents, and how many tiles remain in the wall?
