Year Hands
Hands on the NMJL card that incorporate the digits of the current year (e.g., 2, 0, 2, 5 for 2025) into the tile pattern, making them unique to each annual card.
What Are Year Hands?
Year Hands are a special tradition on the NMJL card where one or more winning hand patterns incorporate the digits of the current year. For example, a 2025 card might feature hands using the numbers 2, 0, 2, and 5, where 0 represents the White Dragon (Soap), since there is no 0-numbered tile.
These hands are thematic and change completely each year since the year digits change. They are a hallmark of the NMJL's annual card design and give each year's card a unique identity. Year Hands may appear within an existing section (like 2468 or Consecutive Run) or in their own designated area of the card.
The digit-to-tile mapping for Year Hands follows standard notation:
- 1-9 = Numbered tiles in the specified suit
- 0 = White Dragon (Soap/0), since tiles do not have a zero value
- Repeated digits (like the two 2s in 2025) often appear as pairs, pungs, or kongs
Strategy for Year Hands
Year Hands can be popular because they are novel and prominently featured on the card. This popularity has strategic implications:
- Competition, Many players are drawn to Year Hands, especially early in the card year when they are still fresh. High demand means the specific tiles may be contested.
- Dragon reliance, Because years often include 0 (mapped to White Dragon), Year Hands frequently require Soap tiles. With only four White Dragons available, competition can be fierce.
- Novelty vs. practicality, Year Hands are fun, but evaluate them objectively against other sections. A Like Numbers hand that matches your tiles better is a stronger choice than a Year Hand you are forcing.
During hand selection, check whether your starting tiles naturally contain the year digits. If you hold several tiles matching the current year numbers, a Year Hand might be viable. But do not chase Year Hands purely for their novelty, let your tiles guide you, as with any other section on the card.
